Problem Tendencies and the Depression Level of Nursing Students


Abstract
This study attempted to determine relationships between selected problem characteristics and the depression level of nursing students.
The purpose was to gain on information which might be used to guide students and to help prevented depression.
The study population considted of 211 students in the ccollege of nursing at Eqha Womans University.
The instruments used in this study were the problem Check List developed by Eungyun Hwang, Chan-wha Chun and Jae-un Kim, And the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) Developed by Zung.
Data were znalyzed by computer for correlation using the pearson¢¥s r test and for statstical significance the t-test was used.
The main findings of this study were as follows :
1. Academic work was the primary problem category for the total group of students.
2. The mean number of preblems increased every year from first to fourth year students. The Family Relationship problem category for the fourth year was significantly higher than the first year.
3. The mean SDS score of the total group was 43.36. The SDS score of the third year was significant higher than that of the first year.
4. When the rank order of the SDS items was examined, the total group of students tended to place psychological symptoms in high rank order and somatic symptoms on lower rank order. The primary psychological symptom was confusion.
5. Personality was the problem correlated most highly with the SDS score for drpression.
6. The 10 problem categories, plus religion and year, seem to contribute to 63% of the rate of depression symptoms. Suggestions were made for the guidence of students and for further study, especially to explore other factors causing depression in nursing students.
